Dr. Lowder,

One year ago I was presented with a very nice buckskin gelding, with one exception. When he was nine months old he was run through a fence and cut under his right "forearm" area and back 24 inches. All but the area under his "forearm" has healed with extensive scarring. He is now five years old. When I first got him, you could almost fit your hand behind his leg, but I have had him nearly healed.

I have been using hydro therapy along with scarlet oil. This therapy gets him nearly closed, but then the wound will "blow up" again. Each time it is a little better, not so open. The previous owner has tried many things, but I am unclear on the exact methods. Do you have some advise??

Thank you for your time.

Hello:

You're going to have to get the wound ultrasounded to determine the depth of the wound and determine if there are deep abscess.

In addition, you may have a foreign body that is the nidus of the problem that the ultrasound will pick up in most cases.

Thanks,
Dr. Lowder
