In 1993, Frank Monteleone had 45 Quarter Horses, including the great mare Corona Chick, in training at Los Alamitos with long-time assistant, Linda Mikus, while he was conditioning six Thoroughbreds at Santa Anita. His distinctive black and gold colors were gracing the winner's circle at both tracks with regularity and everything was coming up roses. People in the horse business seem to have a better grasp on the fragility of life than the rest of the population. Because our lives are so intertwined with the animals in our care, we are aware that, although today we may be in the spotlight, one bad step can send our stable star to retirement. This is a lesson Tim Pinfield learned long ago, but was forced to remember when his "big horse," Big Jag, was injured while preparing for the Dubai Golden Shaheen.People in the horse business seem to have a better grasp on the fragility of life than the rest of the population.
