Keeping
the tradition alive ... HorseCity.com and
Van
Hargis have joined forces again to give
away a horse to one lucky winner on Dec. 24, 2006.
Van Hargis is rapidly becoming known as one of the
most versatile horsemen/clinicians in the business
today. Van has trained and competed in the show
arena in events ranging from western pleasure to
calf roping, in the rodeo arena in the timed events
of calf roping, team roping and steer wrestling.
In keeping up with his responsibilities on his horse
and cattle ranch in Texas, he keeps his own top
quality foundation ranch horses such as those he
takes on the road to the many clinics and expositions
throughout the country. Van's practical experiences
in the show ring, rodeo arena and on the ranch coupled
with a dynamic speaking ability have made him one
of the most exciting presenters and highly requested
clinicians. Van uses each presentation he gives
as an opportunity to share how the horse has helped
him realize the important lessons in his life. He
utilizes the arena and the horse to empathize the
oldest most fundamental lesson, the need for a solid
foundation in horse training as well as everyday
life.

A little more about Chico's Main Feature
To find out more about Feature and his strong blood line, we sat down with Ann Stockstill, owner of Coyote Creek Ranch, who is responsible for breeding and raising Feature thus far.
HC: What gas Feature's personality been like since he was born?
AS: Feature is very inquisitive, likes being the center of attention. He was not shy but always in the center of the action.
HC: Who is his sire?
AS: His sire is SummersChicoBandito. Chico is homozygous for both the black gene and tobiano. He is a 2005 APHA World Champion in SR.Steer Stopping and has his superiors in Heading, Heeling, Steer Stopping and Tie-Down Roping. He also has his ROMS in the above and Working Cow Horse. He has won multiple top 5 and top 10 awards in these events at the World Show for 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002. His pedigree includes A Summer Breeze who was a good all around horse which is what we want Chico and his foals to be.
HC: What aspects do you think Feature inherited from Chico?
AS: Feature inherited Chico's good nature and athletic ability from his sire. He is a fluid mover and catches on quickly to whatever you try to teach him. He is an agile mover and turns on a dime. He will be versatile enough to be able to go into many different disciplines like his dad. All of Chico's foals have great temperaments and a willingness to please like their sire.
HC: Who is Feature's dam?
AS: Her name is The Last Feature. She is an own daughter of the quarter horse Feature and was supposed to be his last foal before he died. She has a fantastic personality. She loves people and will do anything for treats and a rub down. She comes to the house nightly to receive treats over the fence. Chicos Main Feature is her second foal. Her first is Texas Bartime Cowboy and he looks just like his mom. Cowboy is my riding gelding and is close to 16 hands.
HC: What aspects do you think Feature inherited from her?
AS: His dam is a pleasure to ride and she is very people oriented. She will do anything for treats. Because she is an own daughter of the quarter horse Feature, she has a nice hip and chest. She adds size to her foals, as well as, personality.
HC: Why do you think Van Hargis chose Feature?
AS: I think Van saw potential in Chico's Main Feature to succeed in many different areas. Feature's ability to learn quickly will help Van get him ready for any number of possible show careers and his next owner.

Van Hargis on picking the 2006 Contest
Horse:
"Once contacted
by Horsecity.com to be the trainer of the Free Horse
Contest I started looking diligently for a paint
horse that would possess many important positive
characteristics. In an effort to narrow the selection
I started with daughters and sons of recent APHA
World Champions. Secondly, I wanted horses that
had color characteristics that would represent the
APHA in a proud way. The next thing I wanted was
a horse that would be athletic and versatile and
have the size conducive to a variety performance
interest. And...most importantly I wanted a horse
that indicated a kind nature with a desire to learn
and please. Feature scored very high in these categories
and was quickly short listed and ultimately chosen
as our HorseCity.com Free Horse Contest representative."
