Setting up small gymnastics with cavaletti is a great way to apply the principles of lengthening and collecting the stride we've just applied at the canter. Here, the two cavaletti are set at 30 feet, and the goal is to put in an easy 3 strides. The low height of the cavaletti will keep the horse from over-jumping into the distance, and keep the rider from getting so involved in getting over the jump that they forget about working on the approach and distance. Here, as we start the line, we have our eyes up, and have created a nice jump in from a nice collected canter. Always be sure the collected canter is not being created by hand alone, or your horse may jump against the hand and leave long.
