Brazile gets going in Odessa

Trevor Brazile, the 2002 world champion all-around cowboy, certainly isn't one to rest on his laurels.

Brazile of Anson, Texas, won a share of the calf-roping title and captured the crown in steer roping at the Sandhills Stock Show and Rodeo.

All told, Brazile won $9,073 in the two events and quickly began the quest to defend his all-around crown.

Brazile also is an early contender to win a world steer roping crown. He has been runner-up the past three years.

Brazile, 2002 world champion runner-up calf roper Blair Burk of Durant, Okla., and all-around hand Kyle Hughes of Model, Colo., all roped their only calf in 8.1 seconds, good for $1,917 each.

In addition, Brazile also roped and tied four steers in 44.9 seconds, giving him another $7,156.

Other average champions.from Odessa included Micky Downare (Hartsel, Colo.) and Dennis Foyil (Guthrie, Okla.), bareback riding, 80 points, $1,619 each; Matt Reeves (Pampa, Texas), Tyson Brenton (Rosalia, Kan.) and Joe Morris (Elgin, Texas), steer wrestling, 9.6 seconds, $1,083 each; Charles Pogue (Ringling, Okla)/Cory Petska (Lexington, Okla.), team roping, 10.8 seconds on two head, $3,921; Sam Spreadborough (Snyder, Texas), saddle bronc riding, 87 points, $2,287; Jake Suckla (Slickrock, Colo.), bull riding, 89 points, $3,384; and Shannon Tidwell (Alamogordo, N.M.), barrel racing, 14.36 seconds, $2,131.
