Two separate one-day short courses on horse reproduction are being offered in February at the University of Georgia Animal/Dairy Science Livestock Instructional Arena, located on South Milledge and Simonton Bridge Roads.
The first course, Mare Care and Reproduction, is scheduled Feb. 9; the second course, Stallion Management and Reproduction, is scheduled Feb. 10. Each of the two short courses will be presented in a morning lecture-discussion and afternoon laboratory format. Registration will be held each day 7:30 a.m. 8 a.m. followed by the lecture.
Each short course is limited to 25 participants, and registration will be accepted on a first-come basis. Participants may register for each course individually for $175 per course or for both courses at a discounted rate of $300. The fee covers lecture, laboratory sessions, breaks and writing materials. Cancellations prior to registration deadline will receive a full refund; cancellation after deadline and up to the day of the short course will result in a forfeiture of $50 of the registration fee.
Topics of the Mare Care and Reproduction course include maiden care prior to breeding, pregnant mare care pre-foaling, artificial insemination, embryo transfer, newest technologies for infertility and breeding the problem or older mare. Topics of the Stallion Management and Reproduction course include management of the stallion prior to and during breeding season, breeding soundness exam, collection and evaluation of semen, semen handling for artificial insemination and shipping, and records and paperwork.
The courses are sponsored by the UGA Department of Animal and Dairy Science, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Cooperative Extension Service, and the College of Veterinary Medicine Large Animal Department.
