Becoming a Vet

Posted: Wednesday, April 2, 2008

Hi Dr. Mike!

My name is Stephanie. I'm 13 years old, going to turn 14 this May thirteenth, and I want to be a horse and pony vet when I grow up.

I am really in love with horses, and will try to hang around with them as much as possible. My Grandma owns a ranch and stays out there with a few stable hands and our horses, not really my families horses, more hers then ours.

As much as possible I go to the ranch and see the horses (in Brookshire). Two of our horses are named Midnight and Showtime. They both had foals last May, so the babies are yearlings now! The yearling that was born to Midnight, is named Blanca, and Showtime's colt is named Byo. We also have a pony named Smoke but I don't remember when we got him. And there is one more horse that it is a boy but I have forgotten his name. I haven't spent much time with him because he's new.

I'm also into barrel racing, but that's not why I'm writing to you. I'm writing to ask "What should I do to become a successful soon to be vet and barrel racer?".

Please write back as soon as you can, I won't be able to wait!

Thanks Dr.Mike.

Stephanie,
If you want to become a good veterianrian you must make excellent grades in school. You need to study hard, this means when your friends are out playing you are studying. Spend time with your horse and pick up a part time job when you get older at a veterinary clinic and remember to study hard. Good luck and I hope to see you at one of the veterinary meetings one day.

Thank You,
Dr. Lowder
