Scale in ears

Dr. Mike,
On your show last Thursday you talked about not shaving horses ears because they can get this scale in their ears. I am sure that this is what my horse has. I have had several vets look at her and they have been un able to help me. Except for one vet that told me as long as it wasn't bothering her just to leave it as there was an experimental treatment that they are trying the cost $250 a tube and you have to use one tube per treatment and you have to treat her three times a week for 3 months. I can not afford that and was wondering if you knew of something else that would work.

Thank you and I love RFDTV and your show.

Alice,

Thanks for watching the show, we at HorseCity appreciate it. Without seeing the horse I can not say for sure but I would try putting some type of fly ointment (ex., Swat) mixed 50:50 with an antibiotic ointment in his ears. Also, put a fly mask on him. If you can please send me a digital picture of his ear problem. Again, thanks for viewing HorseCity on both the web & TV.

Thank You, Dr. Lowder
