A great Texas calf roping
By John Brasseaux
For 34 years the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo Association has held a calf roping in the fall, with only the best ropers in the state invited. And considering the legions of good ropers Texas produces, that's saying a lot.
Besides the regular roping, the San Angelo rodeo folks has held a match roping, pitting two of the best ropers in the country in a 12-head match. This year, as it has been for the past five years, Cody Ohl was matched against Fred Whitfield. Both are at the top of their game, Whitfield having won five PRCA calf roping titles, the first in 1991, and one all-around title. Ohl won two calf roping titles in the late 1990's. (He's on the verge of winning a third next month at the National Finals Rodeo.)
In the end, Ohl prevailed in the match and went on to win the regular roping. His winnings (the match paid $14,000 to win alone) totaled $20,210. The following photos capture some of the action of calf roping, which played at the level of the San Angelo roping, is an action-filled affair.
