With her third place finish in the first round, plus her two round wins, she has already amassed a Finals earnings total of $40,637. Repeating as the number two finisher was Alamogordo, N.M. cowgirl Sheri Sinor-Estrada, piloting Ali B Kat ("Ali") to a time of 14.19 worth $12,367. In her second-straight qualification to the WNFR, Sheri's quick runs have pushed her up into seventh place in the world standings and she's confident Ali can go the distance and run in all ten rounds. Her Finals earnings total now stands at $24,735. After watching her sons, Clay and Travis Tryan, finish one-two in the team roping, Missoula, Mont. barrel racer Terri Kaye Kirkland nearly equaled their success by taking third place in the third round aboard CashInTheDeckOfAces ("Ace") with a time of 14.21, earning $9,338 to bring her finals total to $13,377. Though she remains in fourth place in the standings, she's trimmed the distance between herself and third place Sherry Cervi to roughly $10,000 and is less than $20,000 out of first place. Besides Shali, Molly Powell is the only other cowgirl to have taken checks in all three rounds. Tonight's run aboard "Princess" stopped the clock in 14.26 for a payoff of $6,562 After three rounds, the Stephenville, Texas barrel racer's total stands at $28,269, and she remains in tenth place in the world standings, after qualifying at the bottom of the field in fifteenth. Reigning World Champion Kelly Kaminski made her first trip to the pay window after round three as she and Rockem' Sockem' Go ("Rocky") posted a time of 14.28 for $4,038. She tipped a barrel in round two, but came back strong in round three to take the fifth place paycheck. Rounding out the top six was Liz Pinkston, San Antonio, Texas, who posted a time of 14.29 aboard Speedy Doc Holiday ("Doc") for $2,524. After taking sixth in round two, her WNFR total now stands at $5,048.
Round Three Results
Shali Lord may be a Wrangler NFR Rookie, but her horse, SX Docslider ("Slider"), knows the tight turns of the Thomas and Mack arena well. He was one half of Molly Powell's borrowed twosome that carried her to a Reserve Championship last year. Now with Shali in the saddle, Slider continues to display the talent that Molly enjoyed last year and he carried Shali to a round two victory, clocking in at 13.96 for a $15,649 payoff. "He kind of got away from me in the alley and just took off," said Shali, "so he was running a lot harder going in that he did last night. There is just no way to safety up on him. I just have to trust him and let him work." Shali has owned the speedy horse for a little more than a year, and had just bought the animal when she loaned it to Molly at last year's Finals. She credits Molly for giving her many helpful suggestions that have helped her excel aboard hard-charging Slider. The Lamar, Colo. cowgirl was only the second runner to break the 14-second barrier. The first came earlier in the round as Alamogordo, N.M., barrel racer Sheri Sinor-Estrada and Ali B Kat ("Ali") posted a 13.99 to take second place and $12,367. Coming off her big win at the Ft. Worth Divisional Tour Finals, Sheri and Ali were primed to make quick work of the small Thomas and Mack pen, and have enjoyed success in indoor pens all year, starting the 2005 season with a commanding victory at the Denver National Western Stock Show in January. Molly Powell turned in a 14.00 to take third for $12,367. Riding Resistol Rookie of the Year Chani Payne's horse "Princess," the Stephenville, Texas jockey has already worked her way up from 15th in the Jack Daniels Old No. 7 World Standings to 10th. Fourth place honors went to Victoria, Texas barrel racer Brittany Pozzi. The 2003 Resistol Rookie of the Year turned and burned aboard Sixth Vision ("Stitch") to a time of 14.05 for $6,562. Montana cowgirl Terri Kaye Kirkland captured a fifth place check worth $4,038 after she and CashInTheDeckofAces ("Ace") ran a 14.21. Terri Kaye says the ground conditions were better tonight than in round one thanks to a light watering. Coming into her second straight WNFR, she'll be celebrating tonight with her son, Travis Tryan, also a WNFR qualifier in the team roping event. The last paid hole went to Stephenville, Texas rider Liz Pinkston who stopped the clock in 14.30 for $2,524 to earn her first paycheck of the 2005 Finals. Riding Speedy Doc Holiday ("Doc"), Liz currently sits in 11th place in the World Standings. She'll need to repeat the success of last year when she won over $60,000 if she wants to be in the mix for a WPRA World Championship in the final round on Sunday, December 11. The Women's Professional Rodeo Association is the governing body for professional barrel racing. It began in 1948 as a group of Texas ranch women who wanted to add a little color and femininity to the rough-and-tumble sport of rodeo, and has now grown to a million-dollar industry with women athletes riding well-conditioned race horses. Today, the WPRA has approved barrel races in hundreds of rodeos sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association each year with total barrel racing prize money of totaling in the millions.
